Today’s society is facing major changes regarding the climate. We humans use natural resources every day without considering the consequences. At the same time, our lives are in great need of cyberspace and its technologies. Cybersecurity is incredibly important for us humans and the security of our companies. Climate change and cyber threats to security are two critical issues that have a lot in common.
Three similarities between cybersecurity and today’s climate change:
Vulnerabilities in cybersecurity and today’s climate change:
Both climate change and cyber threats can risk the security of some of our most important resources, such as water, energy, and infrastructure. People and countries have always relied on the resources of nature, which are vital to survival and maintaining prosperity.
Nature is not the only thing we rely on. Our lives are largely dependent on our data-based technologies, the use of the internet and cyber-spaces almost every day. Just as climate change can harm our assets from nature (water, electricity supply, and energy), which in turn is important for our cyber world, a cyber attack on computers and industrial equipment that controls, for example, water purification and nuclear plants can also affect our assets negatively.
Because climate change and cybersecurity are expanding and we humans are becoming even more dependent on it every day, we need to start adjusting. Much of our infrastructure that is affected by climate change and supports our cyberspace (Internet) was built without taking into account today’s climate changes and cyberattacks; Mostly because we didn’t know much about the climate and the impact of cybersecurity at that time. Therefore, today’s infrastructure is at risk of being threatened by both climate change and the cyber world industry.
No usage limit:
That the use of natural resources and cyberspace doesn’t have a usage limit, is a lie. Though, we humans use both natural resources and the internet as if there is no limit. This has led to such a large utilization of nature’s resources that many of the resources are at risk of being obliterated. Cyberspace and its devices are also used as if there is no limit. The utilization of the Internet’s resources is very large and can be used for many negative things, for example, crime.
People are dependent on nature and so is the cyber world and its security. We get all the energy that is used to power the cyber world from natural resources. If climate change leads to further and more extreme destruction of nature and our societies, it also poses a great threat to the well-being of the cyber world. Because of this, the link between climate change and cybersecurity is strong.
